Curatorial
The Music is Black: A British Story is the inaugural exhibition at V&A East Museum, marking a defining moment for one of the UK’s most significant cultural institutions. Spanning over 125 years, the exhibition traces the influence of Black British music on culture and society, from its roots in African musical traditions to its global impact today. Bringing together over 200 objects across music, fashion, photography and personal archives, the exhibition reveals a story of creativity, resilience and innovation that has shaped British identity and continues to resonate worldwide.
Design Concept
We approached the exhibition as an act of translation, transforming sound into space. We designed an experience that allows music to be felt, using visual rhythm, vibration and spatial sequencing to guide the visitor journey. The exhibition unfolds across four acts, structured through shifts in pace and narrative. Principles inherent to music, compression and release, repetition and variation, are embedded into the architecture, graphics and choreography of movement. Sound becomes the organising force of the space, shaping how visitors move, pause and engage.
Key Genres
The exhibition centres on key Black British music genres, including lovers rock, Brit funk, 2 tone, jungle, drum & bass, trip hop, UK garage and grime.
